Big Block Quilt for Me

June 4, 2013

I finally finished my big, grown up sized quilt!  It takes awhile to make a quilt like this for me.  Here is how things went-  First you decide on what fabrics to buy, then you look at the fabrics for many months until you finally start to make some cuts.  Then you piece some of it together only to discover you didn't buy enough.  Then you buy more only to finish the quilt top and then wait a long time until you make a decision about the backing.  Next you create a backing and wait another few months until you send it off to a long arm quilter to do her magic.  Finally you delay again as you try to find time to do the binding.  And then, it is done and you have something you wish you had finished long ago because it is bright and beautiful and making you happy!

Attention to my quilting friends-  I realize that this super simple quilt may look boring to you and I am in awe of your skills with all the piecing and work of intricate detail!  But it pleases me to have accomplished this look and it will be treasured none the less for its simplicity.  My inspiration for this style was this quilt I found on pinterest.

Turns out its kinda tough to get a good picture of your quilt and now I know why everyone takes them outside.  How do short gals do this?  Holding it up high enough is a challenge!

The backing is just Kona Bone and a wide strip of leftover pieces of fabric.

The fabric is Joel Dewberry Heriloom in Sapphire.  I really like the cool tones since my house is painted all in neutral colors and I wanted a contrast to brighten things up.  Here is how it looks on our bed…

Phew!  Something for me!  I am so glad that I finally got it done and it is just what I wanted.  One note- making your own quilt is not cheap and this particular DIY is soley for your own satisfaction and not a money saving endeavor.  Next- to make a new dust ruffle and maybe change up my old pillows!  Who knows how many years it will take me to accomplish that goal…
