I really love simple tote bags and wanted something fresh to take on my trip a few weeks ago. My Backpack pattern was fresh on my mind (and versions of it all over my sewing room!) so I decided to just use the dimensions to make a new bag.
This was so easy! I just made the adult size backpack but eliminated the front zipper pocket and instead used the measurements for the back piece 2x.
I used the pattern measurements for the lining and the pocket. But I added button closures to the 2 sides of the pocket since they were too open and made grabbing things in and out of the bag a little more cumbersome than I liked. In hind sight, I should have made the lining pocket with a zipper, but this still works great! Finally, I added a magnetic snap to the lining to keep the bag closed.
The handles are duck cloth. I really would have liked to use some leather straps for the handles but decided to use what I had on hand instead of ordering more STUFF. The handle length is about 24” and I attached them 3” in from either side of the exterior pieces.
The versatility of the Day Off Backpack is great! Can you think of more versions? I would love to see pictures and feature you on my Facebook page!
Fabrics used are gold and brown duck cloth from JoAnns, vintage ticking from my neighbor, and natural 12oz. duck cloth for the lining from Fabric.com.
If you like this bag, please help me spread the word by sharing on Pinterest, facebook or twitter! Thanks!
