How to make the Black Kitty from the Modern Folksy Kitty Pattern

How to make the Black Kitty from the Modern Folksy Kitty Pattern

For the past couple of years I have offered a kit to make a really cute (not ghoulish) version of my Modern Folksy Kitty Sewing Pattern in Black.  This year I didn’t offer the kit but I am offering the pattern on sale for just $5!  I decided to share here how to make the yellow eyes and face on the kitty so you could easily re create this version. Here are some tips to learn how to make the kitty face~ Cut out the eyes from the yellow felt.  Use an embroidery needle (a needle with a long eye) to sew the eyes onto the kitty using matching yellow embroidery floss.  Use a split stitch to sew the felt to the kitty body. Print out this PDF below as a pattern to cut out the kitty  eyes Black Kitty Kit face In the sewing pattern, there are links to help you learn these simple embroidery stitches. After sewing on the perimeter of the eyes, use black floss (provided) to sew a satin stitch to make the eye center. Again use, the diagram on page 22 of the pattern to help with the stitches. Enjoy making your black Kitty!  I love how it is decor for Halloween but still pretty...

Classic Bowling Bag in Coral with Tassels

Classic Bowling Bag in Coral with Tassels

Although I set out to make this Classic Bowling Bag sewing Pattern in black, I just couldn’t make myself do it.  I like a soft black leather bag from the department store, but if I am going to sew it, it has to be BRIGHT.  I am so glad I chose this gorgeous coral!  I love how it turned out with the buttery yellow thread. I made the tassels from some up cycled suede and used a saved pice of jewelry from a broken necklace for the brooch.  Have you tried making your tassels yet?  I used this ebook but there are also lots of free tutorials on pinterest. Only one more day to get this fabulous new Classic Bowling Bag sewing pattern for only $5!  After March 16th 2017, it will go up to regular price.  I love how versatile and fun this bag is to make!  Now I just have to decide which one I am going to start carrying around! Don’t forget the giveaway happening too!  For just purchasing the pattern before 3/17/2017, you are entered to WIN!...

Quick Sew Pattern sale & a Social media TIP

Quick Sew Pattern sale & a Social media TIP

I know.  I know.  I talk a big talk about sewing early but I still have some things left to do for my kids.  I figured you might have some things left to sew too.  So,  I selected 5 patterns that are a quick sew but still make a really nice gift.  Five patterns for only $5.00! Head over to a new section in the pattern shop called “quick sew patterns” and grab some deals!  Here are the ones on sale below… SOCIAL MEDIA TIP!  You will notice in the photo mosiac above and the photo below, the small type on each photo.  These graphics were made so that I could run an ad on my Facebook page.  Facebook won’t accept cute sale graphics like the one I did with the penguin above.  That one would be rejected for too much wording.  So, in order to get the word out about my sale, I make these much more simple graphics that facebook will run successfully.  Try it! I spent $20 to run an ad to people interested in sewing.  The ad will run for 7 days- until the 24th.  I run ads everytime I have a sale and I admit that I have mixed feelings if they actually bring people to my shop to buy patterns.  It is useful to be able to reach out to new people though and so I keep running the facebooks ads.  For anyone in a small business, Facebook is friend and foe!  I like the social aspects enough though- it’s fun to chat with people and Facebook is easy to use. Back to the SALE!!!  It is running until December 24th, 2015.  All patterns in the quick sew patterns section were selected since I know they can be sewn fairly quickly without using any special supplies besides the basics- fabric, interfacing, thread, cotton batting.  If you are still sewing, come take advantage of the sale!...

Gingercake’s Big Sale & New Secret Weapon

Gingercake’s Big Sale & New Secret Weapon

Sale time!  For 10 days, 30% ALL PDF SEWING PATTERNS.  This is the biggest sale I do each year.  The only time every pattern is on sale for that big of a discount.  So, stock up and start making! Another thing I wanted to share with you is my newest secret weapon to make beautiful and professional graphics.  No, I didn’t purchase anthing expensive or hire anyone.  I am now using CANVA.  Have you heard of it?  It is pretty awesome and FREE.  If you are trying to promote your handmade business or jut want to make a cute invitation or a cool flyer for your bake sale- you should try Canva out!  It is easy and I have really loved the results.  Above is the promotion I made for the sale.  Below is my new holiday shop banner… A big portion of the canva graphics are free, but they do have some stock photos you can buy for $1.  This photo above was $1 and totally worth to give me that nostalgic handmade chirstmas feel I was looking for. Another cool option is that you can make your graphics specific to different sizes of where you want to use it.  The first sale ad is made in a square- I knew that would work for my newsletter and for instagram.  Below is the graphic I made for twitter.  They start you off with the perfect size so that when you do a twitter post, there is no cropping. I really like that since keeping all the social media sizing straight is too much for me! I also made a holiday Facebook banner that was FREE.  They even put that little left corner box in there so you know not to put any important words in that section.  I love the sequins! Finally, when I am running a sale, I like to run a Facebook ad so that I can reach more people.  But my cute sale graphics above would not be approved by facebook since there are too many words.  Canva has a layout to do a simple mosiac so I can show a bunch of pattern photos and Facebook will run my ad with no problem. In the past, I made these in PSE and it was really time consuming.  But this was super fast and I only had to upload the photos to Canva and then drag them into the mosaic sections. I have not been in touch with Canva at all, so this love is totally uncompensated.  But I am really excited about this FREE service to all of us small business people.  I hope this is helpful to you and you can start making pretty graphics and...

The winner of the DIY crayon Art Folio kit was Jen of quilter in the closet won!  She chose the corodiles for a special boy who is coming to visit at new years.  I love knowing some cute little guy will be using the crayon holder. In other news, I am still trying to get some handmade gifts done.  I thought maybe you might still be sewing too so I am running a little 2 day sale… Head over to the pattern shop and browse for some fun gifts to sew.  If you are short on time, I would suggest the pillow patterns.  The Lola Owl, the elephant and the penguin are all super fast and always big hits with kids!  Also, consider printing at 75% if you don’t have quite enough fabric.  Also, the On the Go Organizer and the Crayon Folios are straight forward and make great gifts too. Honestly, I would NOT suggest making the 3 layer clutch or the Art Caddy or even the duffle (but the sleep over tote is really fast!) since all take a bit more time if you have never sewn them before. Want to get a present for yourself??  You can win a copy of my book, Sewing to Sell, over at Made By Sara and Imagine Gnats.  Sara made a really cute organizer from the...

Sew Cute Love Your Lunch Bag by Alex

Sew Cute Love Your Lunch Bag by Alex

I have been admiring the great looking bags and sewing by Alex on instagram for quite some time.  I knew she would create a really cute Lunch box for our sale this month and I was not let down!  Alex actually made 2 Love Your lunch boxes.  First up is this adorable green chevron in which she used homemade (the best!) piping, added a lovely embroidered monogram, and (on both bags) she used these cool swivel clips… I need those for my next bag for sure!  She made this bag for her 15 year old and it is so perfect!  Youthful but not childish, don’t you think?   The other bag made by Alex features this cute Moda Dottie charm pack.  I have never thought to do a Love Your Lunch Box in patchwork!  It is so cute. And check out this cute quilting on the inside.  This bag looks so sturdy and ready for a delicious packed lunch.  Right? Thanks so much Alex!  All these photos were taken by Alex and shared on her instagram.  She is planning on getting back to blogging soon so add her to your list!  Her blog is called Sew Cute by Alex.  I hope this gave you some good lunch bag inspiraiton!  ...

Sew Fabulous Norah Dress from the Sew Fab Bundle Sale!

Sew Fabulous Norah Dress from the Sew Fab Bundle Sale!

I sewed up the Norah Dress by Welcome to the Mouse House for Miss Marion and she looks so so sweet!  This pattern is another great one in the Sew Fab Bundle.  I loved how easily it came together and how nice it looks on my girl. Since the Norah Dress is a simple A line, the assembly was very straight forward.  The collar and sleeves came together beautifully!  I was pretty relieved not to have to do any skirt gathering! The dress is lined only on the top which was really nice for the finish but kept it from being too heavy as fully lined dresses can sometime become.  Also, the back closure is a simple button and loop which looked great!  I can finally do a decent button hole but appreciate avoiding the process if possible! I added 2 little white buttons under the collar fo some extra interest since my dress fabric was so simple.  I love how sweet and nostalgic this turned out!  The norah dress is a wonderful staple to have in your patterncollection.  It doesn’t use too much fabric, it’s easy to assemble, and it produces a lovely dress.  Hurrah! Only 2 days left to get your Sew fab Bundle!  Visit my original blog post about the Sew Fab Sale to get all the details and enter for your chance to win the Sew Fab Giveaway!   The Sew Fab sale is an affiliate program.  I recieve a portion of all sale made through my website.  Thank you so much for your...

Nigh Nigh Time… Doll, Carrier & Blankie for Sew Fab Sale

Nigh Nigh Time… Doll, Carrier & Blankie for Sew Fab Sale

Another adorable pattern that is part of the Sew Fab Bundle is this Doll, Carrier & Blankie from Patchwork Posse.  This pattern called out to me and said “Gingercake must sew this!”  and I loved it. I used some Get Together fabric by David Walker for the baby body and AnnKelle fabrics for the handles, blanket and carrier.  It was really easy to add the pom poms and I think it made a really cute addition! Little Miss Marion loves it too.  She immediately picked up the baby and said “nigh nigh baby” and cuddled it to her shoulder.  She is a baby doll lover already.  Her oldest sister was the same way- all about the baby dolls.  Her other sister is more into things like her new robot (but that is a whole other story!). Marion immediatley took the blanket off and pushed it back on and held the baby and then put the baby back in the carrier again.  And round and round like all 18 month olds, right?  I had to gently sneak it away from her though because this baby was actually a gift to a super sweet 1 year old cousin.  I will happily make my baby another one though! My favorite part of making this was sewing that sweet face.  The sew fab sale is still going strong!  Check out my original blog post with the info on all the patterns and don’t forget to enter the giveaway at the bottom of the...

Philomena Fox is finally here! On Sale for one week!

Philomena Fox is finally here! On Sale for one week!

Hooray!  The newest Foxy member of the Gingercake PDF Pattern Collection is finally ready!  The circular shape of Max the Owl is perfect to moonlight as a Fox and what can be better than getting 2 patterns in one package?  A Fox and Owl Team!  They are both good hunters, right?  They both live in the woods, right?  They both will love super cute on your bed or sofa, right?! Max was my first pattern created over 5 years ago.  I will admit that his popularity has waned over the last few years.  Poor Max!  He told me he wasn't ready to throw in the towel yet though and teaming up with Philomena Fox was a great solution to keep him in the sewing pattern game.   One of the fun parts about the fox is the trim that goes around her curved face.  It is the perfect solution for not only a great looking accent but it makes the curved seam lay nice and flat.  The finished owl and fox are 10.5'' by 10.5'' and the whole project shouldn't take you longer than a couple hours to complete.  Less if you are familiar with sewing pillows like this already.  There is also an optional pocket that you can add to the back of the pillow for special treasures. For one week only- March 5th through March 12th, 2014, the Max the Owl and Philomena Fox PDF Sewing Pattern will be on sale for it's original price of $7.  Then, it will go up to $9 like the other patterns in the shop that have dual uses.   Also, if you have purchased Max in the past and want this new version, email me and I will give you a special discount code to get the pattern for 50% off.  I will just need some sort of proof that you purchased the pattern before- like the reciept, order number, etc.   Wonderful!  Head over to the shop to get the new Max and Philomena Fox PDF sewing...

Sew Fab Pattern Sale is HERE!

Welcome to the Fall and Winter 2013 Sew Fab e-pattern Sale Event! Last February was the first ever Sew Fab e-pattern Sale and it was so successful and was so well received that Jenny Yarbrough of The Southern Institute, the creator and administrator of the sale, decided to have more!  This sale is bigger and better than the first, with plenty of patterns to get you through the fall and winter (if you live on this side of the hemisphere), and a few warm weather patterns thrown in for those of you who live on the other side of the world.  You'll also find more gender neutral patterns for those of you who are sewing for boys.  And what about you?  Of course there are a few women's patterns thrown in for some selfish sewing too! Over the past several weeks a lot of behind the scenes planning has taken place to bring you this newest bundle of ePatterns from many of the top established and up and coming online sewing pattern designers.  The result is a bundle of 26 PDF sewing patterns that you're going to love! For one week only, twenty-six pattern designers have come together to bring you 26 of their best PDF patterns, valued together at well over $2oo.oo, for the incredible price of $29.95!!!  That’s over 80% off of the combined retail value!  Plus you can enter to win a dream of a giveaway with several prize packages from some of your favorite online fabric shops! For less than $30.00 you will have a library of resources that you can use over and over again. The designers that have joined this sale are experts in their craft.  Each designer has contributed one of their favorite patterns to create a bundle that is sure to please!  Whether you are sewing for your own family or making gifts for others, these are patterns that you will love to use. If you’ve never sewn with a PDF pattern before, let me tell you how great it is!  After downloading your pattern instructions and your pattern, you will print out the pattern itself, creating pattern tiles, if you will.  Simply tape the tiles together to create the full pattern!  At that point you can cut out the size that you need and pin the paper pattern directly to your fabric, or you can trace the pattern size that you need onto sewing paper or tracing paper and cut it out, saving the paper pattern for later when you need to sew another size.  Pdf patterns are so convenient because you can print them out as many times as you need! Now for the good stuff… the PATTERNS! 26 amazing ePatterns from 26 well-known and up and coming designers are instantly accessible to you by PDF download upon purchase of the Sew Fab e-Pattern...
